Nervous Horses
Horses are prey animals and this has a profound effect on their behavior, their immediate reaction to real or perceived danger being to get away as fast as possible which might involve a swift leap sideways, backwards or all-out panicky gallop. They're incredibly curious too though and in these sculptures I depict that moment of tension, of cautious curiosity as they assess an object, heads straining, ears pricked, nervously investigating, poised in readiness to leap or flee, be it from a scorpion or sweet wrapper pretending to be a scorpion!

"Gill your horses are exquisite. Your familiarity with the horse anatomy allows you to create and capture the essence of the horse. They are interested but ready to flee in a second. The forward ears, flared nostrils and wide eyes -fabulous!!"

"You can see the tension, taut muscles, straining neck, eyes like saucers. The legs are planted ready for an explosive retreat. This is a nervous horse, and Gill's sculpture has caught that moment of tension, to a tee!"

"Look, don’t look. I want to see it but I’m poised to gallop away at any second.

Immensely difficult to capture the balance required by the horse but you’ve truly done it"

"Gill's sculpted horses show tension in their movement much as we see it in life. Beautifully captured!"

Horses have featured in my life since I was a small child, I never owned one but I've drawn them, worked with them and now I sculpt them. Donkeys I have huge respect for, musicians and good people too, I honour them all in clay. Explore the wider collection of hand-cast and original sculptures.
